Birthday Q&A

Hi, everyone! So, I asked on my Instagram whether you wanted to see a video or just read a blog post for my birthday Q&A and the majority said to go ahead and do both! If you want to view the video, all you have to do is hit play down below but if you would prefer to read the answers, go ahead and scroll past it for the written answers!

  1. What would be a story you want to write?
There’s a bunch of different stories I want to write. I actually want to do a sort of anthology series. Take different views of the war that we don’t normally see, that starts with occupation television show that I’m doing like the Japanese internment camps or seeing it from the view of the Chinese dealing with the Japanese invaders or maybe viewing it from the point of German nationals.

  2. What is your skincare routine?
To wash my face I’ll use either the Shea Moisture Black African Soap or I’ll use plain old coconut oil and for lotion, I like to use the Shea Moisture Black African, as well.

  3. Is writing both a point of stress but also a stress reliever?
Yes. It’s stressful when I mentally edit myself or I put too much pressure myself to be perfect - when I pressure myself to be perfect. Especially when it’s a first draft, I think that that’s asking a lot of yourself. But it’s also a stress reliever in that everything that’s going on in your head you can put it down on paper.

  4. What do you like most about yourself and why?
I feel like this is one of those interview questions like the one what is your, what is a flaw of yours - what are your three weaknesses. Now, this is just the opposite. I like that I can make myself laugh because I feel like laughter is contagious and therefore I can make other people laugh by default if I can just make myself laugh.

  5. Where do you find inspiration?
More often than not, I’ll find inspiration from my family’s experiences or from my own. Even when I’m listening to music like I mentioned in my blog post, it’ll still somehow circle back to a story that I heard or something I experienced myself.

  6. Do you have a Snapchat?
    Yes. Next question.

  7. What are your top three movies?
My top three movies - movies that I don’t mind watching all day, every day - would probably be: "Forrest Gump", "Lilo and Stitch", "Kingsman". "Black Panther" is up there but I can’t do that until May when it comes out.

  8. What album can you listen to from start to finish without skipping a song?
I can’t say that I have one. I listen to a lot of soundtracks for movies; I like the scores. And I listen to those for inspiration but I can’t say that I listen to all of the songs without skipping any and the same is true for regular albums - pop music, hip hop. I just have favorite songs and I can listen to them over, and over, and over again.

  9. What is your favorite cereal?
I don’t really eat cereal all that much. Maybe Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs because that’s one of my favorite candies.

  10. What movie, no matter when it comes on, do you stop what you’re doing and watch it?
"Forrest Gump". "Forrest Gump" or "Lilo and Stitch".

  11. What is your favorite candy?
    Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

  12. Are you single?
    *record scratch*

  13. What is your ideal date?
I like dates where we can just chill. I think it’s really important to be in an environment that you can have a real conversation rather than shouting over each other or sitting in the cinema and not being able to say anything. Anything with food. And get creative with it. It doesn’t have to be something fancy, it doesn’t have to be anything that demands a lot of money, doesn’t have to be an expedition. Just get creative with it. I think that shows greater interest in that you took the time to do that.

  14. What do you want for your birthday?
I never know how to answer this question, even for my family, because as I’ve gotten older it’s less what do I want than what do I need. But if I had to say something, it would probably be Funko, like bobble head figurines. I have four of them for "Black Panther" and I have three of them for "Justice League". I need Okoye for the Black Panther ones and I have zero "Game of Thrones" Funko-Pops - which I need to get. Harry Potter. Anything Disney. That’s a lot.

  15. What is the worst date turn off?
Just being super macho. It’s - it’s not a good look. I don’t like it.

  16. Do you need a male stripper for your birthday?

  17. Name something that is immediately attractive to you.
Kindness. Genuine kindness. How do you treat somebody who can’t do anything for you? I think that’s the real measure of a person. And if we’re talking physically: a good smile. I’m a sucker for smiles.

  18. Do you prefer the forest or the beach?
I’m an island girl. Give me the beach over the forest any day.

  19. Would you like a small house or a big one?
Medium. Like an average sized house but I guess that depends on where you are. Probably - probably a small house, I’d prefer.

  20. How many animals is too many?
No number of animals is too many. Just kidding. However many you can handle. I think I’m pretty happy with my two right now.

  21. Do you think virtual reality is something you would like to write in since it has so many levels to it for story-telling not just one perspective anymore?
Absolutely. There’s actually a feature film idea that I have that would be ideal for virtual reality. For me. If I could control that. Because it is - it’s a virtual reality experience for one of the characters. Not in a literal sense but because she is so immersed in the story that is being told to her, so to put the audience in her shoes would be - be awesome.

  22. Where is your favorite place to eat?
I don’t know if I have a favorite place to eat. There are favorite places I have for different cuisines. I think the best carne asada in Fresno County is Las Espuelas in Reedley. I will have a burrito from there, probably once a week if I can. Burgers, chains: Habit. Absolutely. I just like to eat.

  23. What is a guilty pleasure for you?
I don’t really feel guilty for loving things. feel like I’m nerdy about a lot of things and I don’t feel guilty about it.

  24. What made you want to start writing?
The absence of stories that I felt were resonating with me or that represented me in terms of ethnicity or background. They were stories I was interested in hearing so the story of my family, or the story of the Korean War, what life is like in Korea, Japanese internment camps - or just normal people love stories. Those are undervalued. Everything has to be super dramatic. Everything has to be over the top and there’s - there’s beauty in what’s normal. There’s beauty in what’s real and I want to write about that. Just because you’re story isn’t what is on screen right now doesn’t mean that your story’s not beautiful and I want other people to know that about themselves. Tell the stories you want.

Thank you to everybody who submitted questions. If you have any questions you want to ask for a future video - questions that are not DM related - just leave them in the comments below. Bye!
